As part of the National Council for Human Rights’ participation in the 89th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Dakar, Senegal, Mohamed Osman, NCHR Board Member, delivered an oral intervention under Item 4 of the agenda, highlighting the Council’s efforts to strengthen its institutional mechanisms and promote and protect human rights.
Osman outlined the Council’s work to improve its complaints mechanism, expand human rights awareness and education programmes, and organize consultations and workshops addressing key issues, including freedom of information, combating discrimination, and reforming personal status legislation.
He also highlighted the Council’s independent evaluation of the implementation of Egypt’s first National Human Rights Strategy, which will inform recommendations for the preparation of the second Strategy for 2027–2031. He further underscored the Council’s preparations to monitor and evaluate the implementation of the new Criminal Procedures Code, with particular attention to criminal justice safeguards, pretrial detention, and fair trial guarantees.
The intervention emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation between the Council and the African Commission and its special mechanisms through regular dialogue, exchange of expertise, and sharing reports and policy recommendations. Such engagement, Osman noted, can strengthen cooperation between national and regional human rights mechanisms and contribute to advancing human rights protection across Egypt and Africa.
